First Aid — A Statutory Workplace Requirement

⚖️
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981

Employers must provide adequate first aid cover based on a first aid needs assessment. This includes first aid equipment, facilities and personnel trained to administer first aid.

🏢
HSE Approved Code of Practice (ACoP)

The HSE's ACoP provides detailed guidance on the number and level of first aiders required based on workplace size, hazard level, and layout. Non-compliance is enforceable by HSE inspectors.

👶
Early Years Statutory Framework

Ofsted and the EYFS require at least one member of staff with a current Paediatric First Aid (PFA) certificate to be on the premises and available at all times when children are present.

🧠

FAQs

First Aid Training FAQs

What is the difference between FAW and EFAW?
First Aid at Work (FAW) is the full 3-day qualification covering a comprehensive range of first aid scenarios including CPR, AED, fractures, burns, poisoning, and medical emergencies. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day qualification covering the most critical life-saving skills. Which you need depends on your first aid needs assessment — higher-risk workplaces typically require FAW-qualified first aiders.
How many first aiders do I need?
The number depends on your first aid needs assessment, which considers: workplace size, number of employees, nature of work (hazard level), work patterns, remoteness from emergency services, and history of accidents. HSE guidance suggests 1 EFAW first aider per 50 employees for low-risk environments, and 1 FAW first aider per 50 employees for higher-risk workplaces.
Do first aid certificates need to be renewed?
Yes. FAW and EFAW certificates are valid for 3 years. They must be renewed before expiry — if they lapse, the full course must be retaken rather than just a refresher. Our automated renewal alerts notify you at 90, 60, and 14 days before expiry to ensure no gaps in cover. Paediatric First Aid certificates are also valid for 3 years.
Can first aid training be done online?
HSE-regulated first aid qualifications (FAW, EFAW, PFA) require a practical element and cannot be completed entirely online. Our blended delivery model combines online theory learning with a practical assessment day at one of our approved centres or at your workplace. The online component covers up to 60% of the course content, reducing time away from work.
