Why It Matters

Why Fire Safety Training is a Legal Requirement

⚖️
Legal Obligation

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires employers to carry out fire risk assessments and ensure adequate staff fire safety training for all non-domestic premises.

🔥
Post-Grenfell Regulation

The Fire Safety Act 2021 and Building Safety Act 2022 have significantly increased fire safety requirements, especially for multi-occupied residential buildings, creating massive demand for qualified assessors.

💼
Employer Duty of Care

Employers face unlimited fines and imprisonment for fire safety breaches. Proper training protects staff, reduces liability, and demonstrates due diligence to insurers and regulators.

📋
Sector-Specific Requirements

Hospitality, healthcare, education, construction and housing sectors all have specific fire safety training requirements over and above the general FSO obligations.

 Key Legislation
Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 — principal fire safety law for non-domestic premises
Fire Safety Act 2021 — extends FSO to external walls and flat entrance doors
Building Safety Act 2022 — higher-risk building safety regime
BS 9999:2017 — Code of practice for fire safety in building design
The Fires Prevention (Metropolis) Act 1774 — still in force in London

FAQs

Fire Safety Training — Frequently Asked Questions

Is fire safety training a legal requirement in the UK?
Yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires responsible persons to ensure that all relevant persons are appropriately trained in fire safety. This includes not just fire marshals but all employees who may need to respond to a fire emergency. Failure to provide adequate training is a criminal offence.
How often should fire safety training be renewed?
Fire marshal training should be renewed annually or when there are significant changes to the premises, evacuation procedures, or staff roles. Fire risk assessments must be reviewed annually or following any significant change. Our automated renewal alerts notify you at 90, 60, and 14 days before expiry.
Can fire risk assessments be completed online?
Our Level 3 Award in Fire Risk Assessment is delivered in a blended format — online theory learning followed by a practical assessment. The actual fire risk assessment of a premises must always be conducted in person on-site.
Do I need a qualification to conduct fire risk assessments?
The FSO requires the responsible person to be 'competent'. While no specific qualification is mandated in law, the government and fire and rescue services strongly recommend a recognised qualification such as our Level 3 or Level 4 Awards. For complex premises, a Level 4 or equivalent is considered the industry benchmark.
Are your fire safety certificates digitally verifiable?
Yes. All certificates issued by Compliance College include a unique certificate ID and QR code that links to a live public verification page. Employers, insurers and fire authorities can verify the certificate status in real time without contacting us directly.
